Why are women so beautiful to look at yet periods so treacherous to even mention? There is a clear dissonance, specially in the male community. Men love women, they love breasts, ass, and especially vaginas yet they want to completely negate the monthly phenomenon that is menstruation. Something so medically critical to a woman’s existence, and also so numerous in occurrence is virtually “erased” from their minds. As a woman, I’ve yet to meet a man who isn’t, in some way, put off by the mention of it. But historically, and by sheer indoctrination, men are taught to not be squeamish: men are the doctors, the hunters, the killers. Clearly, this disgust isn’t toward blood itself. Somehow, and there cannot be any other reason other than sexism, it was only menstruation blood that “grossed them out”. One of the most anticipated moments of the finalized piece will be to watch as men peruse the book.
For the book, I will try to express some of the following motifs:
Power through nudity
Negation of the actual individual (through erasure of eyes)
Desensitization of nudity through repetition
Pairing the beautiful with the “grotesque”
